Who Are We?

Don't matter if your Republican...

Don't matter if your Democrat...

Crazy is as crazy does.

Schizophrenia and psychosis have no party affiliation. These conditions are equal party offenders. Now if someone could just alert the media and our elected officials.

I have watched with much sadness these past few days the unfolding of the unspeakable tragedy that happened in Arizona. The fact that it happened at all was sad enough--but the actions of our media and the comments of our elected officials (on both sides of the aisle) have been atrocious. How does one make this political?

Jared Loughlan is, by all appearances, a very mentally disturbed young man. I don't know a lot but I know what crazy is. As a matter of fact, I specialize in it! Mental illness does not excuse one of the consquences of their actions by any means.

If we're going to debate or fight over anything, let's start with the sad state of mental health care in this country. Have you ever noticed on your health insurance policy (and that's IF your lucky enough to have one) how much it covers for mental health care? You'll probably notice it is much less and limited than routine medical coverage. And for most people it's not really a problem, unless, of course, you or a loved one are unfortunate enough to be stricken with mental illness. But, I guess, that is a rant for a different day.

I guess what I'm trying to say here is that in the face of tragedy, it would be nice, if for just once in a while, we could pull together as a country--as Americans.

Because after all, that is who and what we are.

In my own humble opinion...

Blessings of peace & all that is good,
Debra

Debra, You are so right about the sad state of mental health care in this country. If your leg is broken, all well and good. Insurance covers much, if not all, of your costs. If your brain is broken, too bad. Even with limited coverage, good luck on collecting your benefits. The insurance companies seem to place every conceivable hurdle in the way of folks less able to stand up to them. As if mental illness is not a real illness and the patient is malingering.

Debra, amen. I get so annoyed at the finger pointing and blame assigned to everyone and everything but the real perpetrator of the crime. No one forced Jared Loughlan to commit that crime. It was all of his choosing.
The real problem with the country is the fact that God keeps being taken out of the equation and when that happens evil abounds.
Blessings,
Rose

I'm in total agreement. It grieves me to no end how this has turned in to a political media nightmare from BOTH sides. What's it going to take for it to stop? I wonder.
"If my people, who are called by by name, will humble themselves and pray..." Ya, that's it! Novel idea.

It sure would be nice if all the big noisy talkers could just stop trying to tell us how bad the other guy is and focus on the work that needs to be done. There's an awful lot to do around here, and it isn't getting done while folks yammer and holler about how scary "they" are because "they" aren't "us".

I say treat others with respect, disagree without being disagreeable, and practice random acts of kindness.

That scripture is perfect for this situation. The politicizing of this event has saddened me. Even though I avoid hot button topics on my blog, I very nearly tackled this one. You said it much better than I would have. Very well written Debra.

Well said, Deborah! But then you always seem to say things better than most! (That's my humble opinion.) :)

I totally agree with you 100 percent, Debra! I have been feeling that way for the last two weeks. What is wrong with us that we can't come together at such a tragic time as this?

And in order to GET the mental health care - good or bad as it is - one must overcome the stigma of the label in order to seek the help. It makes me appreciate how fragile we all really can be and how the system we turn to often fails us without accepting any responsibility of the consequences of the failure.
